Let's start with the obvious: choosing the stack. Language, framework, database — it feels monumental. And it is, in the sense that you'll live with the consequences for years. But here's the paradox: having concrete examples doesn't make the decision easier. It makes it harder. When you can see working code in multiple languages, you're no longer choosing between abstractions. You're choosing between real implementations, each with visible trade-offs. The AI can generate the code, but it can't tell you which trade-offs your team will be comfortable living with for the next three years.

And for the vast majority of SaaS applications? Those microscopic performance differences still don't matter. Unless you're in high-frequency trading or real-time gambling systems, the performance gap between mainstream languages is irrelevant next to delivery speed, maintainability, and your team's ability to reason about the code. If your entire team is experienced in TypeScript and you pick Rust because the AI made it look elegant, you'll either ship nothing or ship something dubious. Probably both.

The Tiny Decisions That Actually Run the Show

Now let's go to the complete opposite end. The decisions that don't seem like decisions at all.

You need to add a change to your service. Nothing fancy — no architectural overhaul, no new dependency. Just a straightforward feature. In theory, there's not much to decide. In practice, you're making dozens of calls:

Same principle that makes compound interest powerful and credit card debt devastating. One slightly-off naming convention? Nothing. Two? A minor inconsistency. Ten? A pattern. A hundred? "The way we do things here." And suddenly your codebase has a character that nobody designed — it just emerged from the accumulation of a thousand micro-choices.

This is especially insidious because of frequency. You make the big decision — which database — maybe once. Understanding Before Building (Now With Concrete Examples)

Before any architecture gets chosen — before any production code gets written — there's still this phase that doesn't feel like "real work" but remains the most important part: understanding the problem.

The fundamentals haven't changed. You still need to ask domain experts questions and brace yourself for inconsistent, reactive answers. People still don't have well-structured mental models of their own processes. They respond to specific questions with specific answers, without checking for consistency.

(This, by the way, is exactly how LLMs behave. You ask a question, you get an answer — not necessarily accurate, not necessarily consistent, just the most plausible response in the moment. The similarity is not coincidental.)

But now you have a superpower: when someone describes a business rule in the abstract, you can immediately ask for a concrete implementation. "So when you say 'loyal customers get discounts,' can you be more specific? Show me what that algorithm would actually look like."

And then — here's the magic — you can generate that algorithm in real time. The conversation shifts from vague requirements to concrete critique. Instead of "I think we need flexibility," you get "This hardcoded 10% threshold seems wrong, but the structure feels right." Instead of endless abstraction, you get specific reactions to specific code.

I've been using this approach for many months now, and it's genuinely changed how requirements conversations work. You move from hypothetical to concrete much faster. The domain experts can see their mental model expressed in code and immediately spot where it's wrong or incomplete. The gap between "we should do X" and "here's what X actually looks like" collapses.

The key insight: specificity is how we compensate for human cognitive limitations. We're not great at thinking in the abstract. We're reactive — we address things as responses to specific causes, not as carefully considered generic principles. AI doesn't change this about humans, but it makes specificity much cheaper to generate.

The New Decision Landscape

The pyramid of decisions hasn't disappeared, but it's shifted:

The paradox remains: we spend most of our energy thinking about the top layer, but the bottom layer shapes the lived experience of working in a codebase. Nobody opens a file and thinks, "Ah, what elegant architectural choices." But everyone notices when AI-generated code follows inconsistent patterns because no clear guidelines existed.

Software development is still the sum of its decisions. Not just the ones you make in meetings with whiteboards and architecture diagrams. The ones you make at 4 PM on a Tuesday, slightly tired, reviewing AI-generated code and deciding whether it follows the principles you've established or needs to be rewritten.
